The Singalila trek was put into the trekking map in the early 20th century when trekking was a sort of a family picnic in the wilderness. When organized treks came into being, this very trek was introduced with a little variation. Thus Darjeeling can boast of having the first organized trekking route in India. We drive from Darjeeling to Manebhanjyang, a sleepy hamlet situated on the Indo Nepalese border from where we begin our trek to Sandakphu. We pass through scattered hamlets across pristine forests of rhododendron, magnolias, orchids, bamboo and other rare high altitude plants. The reward at the end of it all is the unsurpassable view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu and Kangchenjunga and the unmatched sunrise and sunsets visible from Phalut and Sandakphu. |
