This 18 day trip
really offers an off the beaten track experience away
from the din of modern life and free from the hustle and
bustle of cityscape. The trek takes you deep into the
lap of the Dhaulagiri Massif. Quiet, secluded and
unspoilt, this trek offers a unique perspective into the
lives of the mountain people of Nepal. The route does
not see many trekkers and is away from the regular
tourist ‘traps’ and in unsoiled by modernisation. A
visitor can taste the real Nepal – its unique culture
and natural beauty. The trail passes through lush
vegetation, rice fields and the arid high altitude
deserts dotted with quaint little villages. Colourful
Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the breeze, stupas
that dominate the skyline of the villages and multihued
monasteries give a visitor an unforgettable experience.
The trail meanders through apple orchards and green
river valleys until we leave behind the main busy
Annapurna Circuit at Larjung and head towards the Base
Camp on the east face of Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest
peak in the world. The trek passes through some of the
highest passes on this route as we make our way along
glaciers and glacial moraines which is the most
difficult part of the race. We again rejoin the main
Annapurna trail and proceed northward along the Kali
Gandaki Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world, to Jomsom
the gateway to the ancient kingdom of Mustang. The
towering Nilgiri against the blue sky serves as a
brilliant backdrop and a sharp contrast to the desert
landscape of Jomsom. We pursue a side trip to Muktinath
where you can "liberate yourself" like the holy Buddhist
and Hindu pilgrims in the 108 water spouts that wash
away sins.
