We take a short flight
from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar which serves as the airhead
to this region and we walk across the Arun Valley slowly
ascending towards the base of Makalu, the fifth highest
mountain in the world at 8481m. We follow the ridge
above the Arun River, proposed site for the largest
hydroelectric plant in Nepal and go further north. The
trek offers a close look at the Nepalese way of life.
Children walking to their village schools, people
tending to their fields, shepherds herding their cattle,
women returning home after collecting fodder, small
girls with water vessels on their hips, elderly people
congregating at the village square under the papal tree
are sights that leave an everlasting imprint on the
minds of the people. As we ascend the lifestyle of the
people and the houses change as we enter the realm of
the Sherpa people who have lived in this high mountain
area for quite some time now. We pass high alpine
pastures, rhododendron forests, rural farmsteads and
small villages as we continue through yak pastures
towards the endless ice fields of Mt. Makalu. Along the
route we are treated to some awesome views of the
Kanchenjunga massif, Everest, Lhotse, Baruntse and
Chamlang as well as the rarely seen Kangshung face of
Everest. We make return through isolated Sherpa villages
back to Tumlingtar and fly back to Kathmandu.
